July 26–November 15, 2025
Led by Native-owned organization 785 Arts, the DoPiKa Project is a unique collaborative initiative that unites the community in honoring the Native nations who ceded the land that now comprises Shawnee County. DoPiKa: Reinstate, the second DoPiKa Project gallery exhibition, brings together art and historical research to illuminate the rich heritage of Native Americans connected to the state of Kansas. “Reinstate” is a deliberate play on words that emphasizes the necessity of restoring Native voices to the forefront of discourse about this state.
In the north gallery, art from the Mulvane collection is presented alongside work by featured artists Norman Akers (Osage) and Sydney Pursel (Iowa Tribe of Kansas and Nebraska). Explore paintings, drawings, videos, prints, and sculptures made by Native artists whose tribal identities and personal experiences intersect with Kansas. In the study gallery, learn about the history of the many tribal nations that have current or ancestral ties to this state. DoPiKa: Reinstate invites you to engage with the narratives and artistic practices of Indigenous communities that mainstream culture has long overlooked.
