Hong Chun Zhang was born and raised in China, where she studied figural ink painting at the Central Academy of Fine Arts in Beijing. She moved to the United States in 1996 to continue her art education in California, and is now based in Lawrence, Kansas. On the thirtieth anniversary of her immigration, Journey to the West considers the trajectory of Zhang's artistic practice. Drawing from her technical foundation, personal experiences, and social observations, her paintings and drawings have explored topics from gender to cultural differences, environmental concerns, and political issues. Her richly detailed art balances the universal and the particular to invite conversations about identity, family, memory, and social connection.
