In his newest paintings, Kansas City artist Harold Smith reimagines iconic works from art history. His paintings recast the traditionally white protagonists, giving them Black faces that remind him of the people who have surrounded him his whole life—around the way folk, as he puts it. With lush colors and expressive brushwork, Smith shines a spotlight on those who have often been excluded from art.
